In compliance with the Lead and Copper Rule, Prince William Water analyzes water distributed to customers to assure that it is not corrosive. Corrosion control is needed to prevent dissolution of lead from lead solder in older homes and extend the life of household pipes. Prince William Water water suppliers, Fairfax Water and the City of Manassas, add corrosion inhibitors that contain phosphate.

Key to Corrosion Control Water Quality Parameters

Temperature is measured to put in perspective other parameters. Corrosion is normally higher at higher temperatures.

pH measures how acidic or basic water is. Too acidic or too basic water is corrosive. Most living things need water to have a pH of about 7, which is neutral. Corrosive liquids decompose (or eat away) metals from pipes, faucets, etc.

Alkalinity is the ability of water to neutralize acids. The water distributed to your home has good levels of alkalinity to prevent corrosion of pipes and faucets.

Calcium is analyzed to determine how “hard” the water is. Calcium is a mineral that makes water hard.  Hard water is not a health issue but can be a problem because of mineral buildup on plumbing fixtures and poor soap or detergent performance.

Conductivity is used to monitor the consistency of quality from water purification processes which remove inorganic contaminants from water.
