WOODBRIDGE, VA, Dec. 16, 2025 — As winter weather sets in, Prince William Water encourages residents and businesses to Be Salt Smart by using de-icing salt responsibly to help protect our local waterways and infrastructure.
While salt is effective at melting ice, more isn’t always better. Excessive use can accelerate the deterioration of sidewalks and driveways and harm freshwater lakes, streams and aquatic life.
“Salt helps keep us safe on icy roads and sidewalks, but too much can harm the environment, damage infrastructure and impact our drinking water,” said Don Pannell, Deputy General Manager and Chief Operating Officer at Prince William Water. “What goes on the ground flows into storm drains and eventually into our water sources. We all have a role in using salt wisely to protect water quality.”
Prince William Water provides the following tips to Be Salt Smart this winter:
- Shovel early: Clear snow before salting to make salt more effective. To reduce or eliminate the need for salt, start by removing ice from your driveway and sidewalk with an aluminum-edged shovel.
- Spread evenly: Place salt in the specific spot where it’s needed, rather than randomly scattering it.
- Use less: A 12-ounce coffee mug of salt should cover about 10 sidewalk squares.
- Sweep up leftovers: Sweep up and reuse leftover salt.
