Prince William Water Earns 17th Consecutive National Association of Clean Water Agencies Award

WOODBRIDGE, VA, August 25, 2026 — Prince William Water has once again received national recognition for excellence in wastewater treatment and regulatory compliance. The H.L. Mooney Advanced Water Reclamation Facility (AWRF) has received the Platinum 17 Peak Performance Award from the National Association of Clean Water Agencies for 17 consecutive years of 100% permit compliance with federal and state wastewater treatment standards.

Farr, Jr., P.E.  “It underscores our continued commitment to environmental protection and to providing reliable, high-quality wastewater treatment services for the residents of Prince William County.” 

Achieving the Platinum 17 Peak Performance Award is a significant milestone in the wastewater industry. Mooney AWRF is one of 66 wastewater treatment facilities in the nation to earn the designation for 17 consecutive years or more. This places the facility in the top 1% of 16,000 wastewater treatment facilities in the United States. This recognition is especially notable within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, where facilities must meet more restrictive standards than many other utilities throughout the U.S.  The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality requires the reduction of nitrogen and phosphorus in wastewater before it is released into the environment, ensuring water quality and preventing excessive algae growth that can harm aquatic life. 

Mooney AWRF treats wastewater for Prince William Water customers in eastern Prince William County. In Fiscal Year 2026, the facility treated 5.3 billion gallons of wastewater before releasing it into Neabsco Creek, a tributary of the Potomac River.
