PFAS Testing Requirements and Industrial User Survey
Publicly owned water utilities function as "passive receivers" of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances or PFAS. This class of more than 6,000 manmade chemicals can be found in non-stick cookware, food packaging, personal care products and water-resistant apparel. Water utilities do not participate in the production or manufacturing of these products. Instead, they receive PFAS through the raw industrial wastewater discharge originating from domestic, industrial and commercial sources. This discharge waste containing PFAS chemicals flows into our reservoirs, rivers and treatment plants.
Concerns about drinking-water quality and potential exposures to per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) at the point-of-use (tap water) are growing in the United States. To assess potential exposures to PFAS Prince William Water is inviting local industries to participate in a survey focused on collecting data about potential PFAS sources.
