Project Description

The Occoquan Creek Sewage Pumping Station Replacement Project will modernize critical wastewater infrastructure that serves Prince William County. The existing station, built in 1975, has aging equipment and is increasingly affected by flooding and shoreline erosion. A 2018 condition assessment confirmed the need for a full replacement to ensure long-term reliability and environmental protection.

Prince William Water evaluated multiple locations and selected a new site that offers improved safety, efficiency, and reduced community impacts. Construction is targeted to begin in late 2026, with an estimated one- to two-year schedule.

Project Goals

  • Upgrade the pumping system with modern, efficient equipment that meets current standards.
  • Increase future wastewater capacity to 17.28 million gallons per day.
  • Improve resiliency by elevating the facility above the floodplain and relocating it away from the shoreline.
  • Reduce odor and noise impacts with advanced odor control and sound-reducing enclosures.

Key Benefits

  • More discreet and resilient facility.
  • Activated carbon odor control achieving up to 99.5% hydrogen sulfide removal.
  • Reduced odor formation through improved pump efficiency and lower retention time.
  • Reliable wastewater service for current and future county needs.
