WOODBRIDGE, Va., June 4, 2026 — Prince William Water is encouraging customers throughout its service area to voluntarily practice wise water use in response to the Drought Watch declaration announced today by the Drought Coordination Committee of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG).

COG issued the Drought Watch due to persistent dry conditions, including record-breaking temperatures, historically low Potomac River streamflow and a two-year rainfall deficit of nearly eight inches. These indicators point to a growing risk of more severe drought, prompting officials to encourage voluntary water conservation across the region.

Residents and businesses are being asked to use water wisely as part of their daily routines. Practicing wise water use measures now will help optimize the use of water resources. Despite the current conditions, regional officials emphasize that there is an adequate supply of water in the Potomac River and back-up reservoirs.

Prince William Water encourages customers to use water wisely year-round with greater appeal for customers to voluntarily reduce water use and protect our resources during persistently dry conditions.  A detailed list of tips for wise water use for residents can be found at Wise Water Tips. For commercial customers visit here for wise water use guidance.

Here are some simple tips residents can use to optimize indoor and outdoor water use:

  • Monitor watering of lawns, plants and shrubs.
  • Sweep sidewalks and driveways instead of using a water hose.
  • Avoid washing your car or instead use a commercial car wash that recycles water.
  • Fix any plumbing leaks – especially toilets and faucets.
  • Reduce the length of your shower.
  • Turn off water while brushing your teeth.
  • Wash full loads of dishes and clothes.
