WOODBRIDGE, VA, Dec. 19, 2024 — With winter weather on the horizon, Prince William Water has a new webpage dedicated to promoting “Salt Smarts” this winter. The online resource is designed to provide residents and businesses with the latest information on how to use salt safely and effectively for deicing during the colder months, while minimizing its environmental impact.

During winter weather conditions, communities often rely on salt to improve driving and walking conditions. However, excessive or improper use of salt can lead to significant environmental harm and infrastructure damage.

The new webpage, Be Salt Smart | Prince William Water, offers tips and information on using salt in a smart and sustainable way. Key features of the webpage include:

  • Best Practices for Salt Application: Learn how to use the right amount of salt to reduce waste and environmental harm.
  • Environmental Awareness: Understand the impact of salt on local water quality and ecosystems.
  • Kid-Friendly Resources: Education tools to teach kids how to be salt smart.
  • Community Resources: Access the Salt Management Strategy (SaMS) Toolkit for residents and professionals.

"We're excited to provide this resource for our customers," said Don Pannell, Deputy General Manager and Chief Operating Officer at Prince William Water. “By adopting smarter salt use practices, we can protect our infrastructure, water quality and the environment while keeping our roads and sidewalks safer during winter weather."
